On Protecting Your Coconut... With Coconuts!

Hey, gang!

A big THANK YOU to those of you who made it to our live Zoom event with Mary Newport, MD, last week. We had a terrific discussion, and I really appreciated all the participation and the thoughtful questions.

In case you missed it, we discussed Dr. Mary’s latest book, Clearly Keto: For Healthy Brain Aging and Alzheimer’s Prevention. The book lays out a program for protecting your cognition as you age, including a Mediterranean-style diet, MCT and Coconut oils, lifestyle changes, supplements and more.

You can watch the video by clicking above. Or, if you’re more of an audiophile, listen to the podcast here on Substack, on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or your favorite podcast platform.

As much great information as we covered, I feel like we only scratched the surface, so I recommend you grab yourself a copy at Amazon or at Bookshop.org.

A quick housekeeping note: I’m now signed up as an “affiliate” at both of the sites above. When I post a link to a book or product, you can click the link and purchase there. Doing so won’t cost you any extra, but they give me a a little “finder’s fee,” which will help keep this blog going.

And another: I’m guessing that most of us are part of the 82% of American households who have an Amazon Prime account (more than those who decorate an Xmas tree or own a pet) so the Amazon link is the most convenient, and I’ll continue to include it in my posts. But if you have the time, I’d ask you to use my Bookshop.org page. A certified B-Corp, Bookshop gives a larger share of proceeds to authors, and with every purchase, they donate a portion of their profits to independent bookstores. In addition to the book club shop, I’ll keep adding other recommended reads as I come across them. Thanks!

As she mentioned in the interview, Dr. Mary has compiled a treasure trove of research into the ketogenic diet and brain health. Check out her site at coconutketones.com.

winner!

As I mentioned last week, I’m doing a giveaway this month: everyone who registered at or just after the LowCarbUSA conference was entered for a chance to win a signed, limited edition copy of My Unremarkable Brain in hardcover. If you’re one of these folks, 1) Welcome! I’m glad to have you here, and 2) keep an eye on your inbox this week to see if you’ve got a shiny new book coming your way!

metabolic makeover

Finally, folks have already been asking me, what’s the next book club pick? Well, I’m happy to say that this month I’m getting back to basics with one of Dave’s Faves: Dr. Ben Bocchicchio’s 15 Minutes to Fitness (also on Amazon here).

Longtime readers will remember my podcast interviews with Dr. Ben, where we covered all things diet & exercise. Last weekend, I got to spend some time with Dr. Ben at LowCarbUSA. I brought my book for him to sign, and he very kindly obliged. And then I thought, I should really give this another read.

Why? For one thing, Dr. Ben’s book is more than just another diet plan. He gets deep into the factors that influence metabolic health, and the changes you can make to influence your metabolism, making the science easy to understand in his inimitable Dr. Ben style.

He conveniently wraps all this science into an easy-to-follow program that he calls “The Five-Week Metabolic Makeover.” Now, to be honest, my New Year’s resolutions have gotten off to a bit of a halting start, so at this point a makeover sounds like just the ticket.

For the next month, I’ll share my experience with Dr. Ben’s “controlled carb” eating plan and his “SMaRT” exercise program here in the blog, and the five-week makeover will culminate with a live Zoom session with the good doctor himself.

Feel free to join in! Read the book, try the workouts, eat the meals… or just follow along. If you like, we can use the “comments” section below to share commitments, comments, wins, losses, questions and accountability. I hope you can join in!
